I could see where it could possibly be a CVA or Reunion flag, though it still doesn't look quite right to me. My reaction of "fake" might be a bit harsh, but that is on the assumption that the flag was sold to you with the assurance that this flag was captured in battle...which I very highly doubt. Did the museum make any claims about this item when they sold it to you? I'm sure Greg and the others can speak more to the details, but to me the stitching doesn't look right, the stars don't look right (double sided as opposed to "cut away", and the spacing seems off), lack of fimbriation (the white border that should surround the St. Andrew's Cross), and quite honestly those grommets kill it for me. I have never seen a period flag that has metal grommets (they might exist, I just have not seen them). Buying it from a museum doesn't usually guarantee anything either, in fact most museums don't tend to sell off items like this if they are of great historic importance. When it comes to the soldier, just because he existed doesn't mean he had anything to do with the flag. Have you found any records of him being awarded the Medal of Honor fr capturing this flag? Can you tell us his unit so we can see what confederate units they fought against and if they lost any colors in battle? I couple personally make up a flag and donate it to a museum and say my relative captured it...he was a real man, all of his records exist, but if the rest of the facts don't check out it doesn't mean that flag I gave away was real. I guess a lot of this boils down to what exactly did the museum tell you when they sold you this flag? Did they charge you a very large amount that you would expect an original to go for, or was the deal a little too good to be true?
