Sadly, and I think this needs to be done, I know of no scholarly study of the ANV Richmond Depot flags with regards to their sewing techniques. I think this would be inn valuable for us all.

Mike - what flag is that you have depicted? Looks like a 6th or 7th Bunting. I have no idea who or when it was decided to that stars would go further out on the blue bars than the 6 inch spacing on the 1st through 3rd Bunting flags (began to go further apart with the 4th Bunting) nor why they decided that. So much documentation from the Richmond Depot is missing that we may never know. Their 1862 production book survives at the National Archives and I have copied all pertinent flag information from that huge book. We all wish those for the rest of the war survived as so many questions, including how many flags were made, would be answered. Only about 50 each of teh 1st and 2nd Bunting flags were made.
