I have a question on construction. As I understand, most of Richmond Depot issues were assembled piecework by ladies at their own homes/businesses. HOW were these pieces sewn? All by hand; all by machine; long seams by machine, stars by hand; every combination imaginable?
Are any known all machine sewn including the stars?
As an aside (from my knife and pike research), Union Manufacturing Company in Richmond in the prewar years made "Sloat's Elliptic Shuttle Sewing Machine" (in the ACW, they converted to a variety of wartime goods). From their advertizing, these were THE sewing machine to own, and I suspect a number were floating around Richmond available for flag sewing.
