Re: Va State / Militia background color origins?

Hi Tom,

More below:

>>>>From you answer, you are confessing time periods, Armies, Continental Army and State Militia. Although the British & French Armies did influence some designs, it was General Washington & Congress that designated the colors of flags used by the Continental Army and those of the States Militia.>>>>

I was just doing a brief overview of the flags and where the color codings began. I should have been more clear however that the blue facings part did not exist when the US Army adopted the blue uniforms. That is what I meant. Baron Von Steuben created the two flags concept via his drill manual (1778 I think - I would have to pull down my copy of the book).

>>>The U. S. Army was reorganized after the Rev. War and new colors. It was also reorganized after the Mexican War and again new colors.>>>>

To be more correct, the US Army was created after the Rev War as there is no lineal connection between the US Army and the Continental Army as the latter force was disbanded save for about 80 men. The 1st and 2nd American Regiments (1791 or abouts) were totally new formations created to deal with the growing Indians problem in the midwest (the the west) in what would become Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky. Both regiments got chopped up in St. Clair's Defeat by Little Turtle's Confederation about 15 miles from where I used to live in Ohio (now Fort Recovery, so named by Gen. Anthony Wayne when his Legion retook the area a couple years later). The 3rd US Infantry, the oldest active US Army regiment, traces its lineage back to one of Wayne's Sub-Legions.

The rest I made mention of in my previous posting.

>>>The Continental Regiment of 1777 from Virginia carried a blue flag with the State Seal adopted in Williamsburg, July 5, 1776. Mr. George Mason read the description of the flag and seal to the delegation. The bonnie blue reference is rubbish.>>>

It is indeed and this time frame you have posted should well put that myth to rest.
