I do like the term "personal flags"......it embodies what I am looking for, that connection between the folks at home and the soldiers. When some of this information makes it into my presentation on small patriotic items, I will stress the importance of this, as well as the fact that "Bible Flags" is a modern term. I, too, have only seen them referred to in period accounts as "little" or "miniature" flags...and sometimes not even in those terms, but simply by their usage you know their relative size. Clara Solomon, in New Orleans, several times mentions making a flag from ribbon and wearing it into town "upon her bosom" to show her defiance.
