It is confusing, that is why I enjoy working with everyone on this outstanding site. I was searching the internet for the 1st or 3rd North Carolina lost a flag, I did not find anything, but I will believe you. I know in the past I came across that either the 1st or 3rd NC lost a flag.

Many Union flags were captured at Chancellorsville and at Salem Church and when the 6th Corps crossed the Rappahannock River over the U.S. Ford.

Just off memory the 102nd Pennsylvania infantry regiment threw one of their flags into the river to prevent the flag from being captured. The Confederates did "Fish" it out. But there are several flags reported captured with no information on them.
