Re: 22nd Virginia Battalion flag - Chancellorsvill

Hi, Greg, I did not see any Union soldiers on the Medal of Honor list that reported capturing the flag. I have read also that the 22nd Virginia Battalion lost their flag at Chancellorsville.

It is also not in the "Colors of the Gray".

It must have been captured on May 3rd, 1863, around 7AM-8AM. Here is a list of Union regiments that were near the 22nd Va Battalion (Frank O'Reilly maps). Map 10 of 12.

To the right of the 55th Va and 22nd Va Battalion was the 7th NJ and 2nd NY (They were on the other side of the Orange Turnpike road). The 1st and 2nd USSS were in front (after taking on Pender's brigade). On the 22nd Va's upper left flank was the attacks by Carroll's brigade. The 7th WVA was on the far right, 4th Ohio in the middle and 14th Indiana on the far left. (They were just South of Bullock Road). On the other side of Bullock Road, was 132nd Pa (closer to the road) and 1st Delaware. (On the right of the 132nd Pa).

Slightly behind the 1st USSS and 2nd USSS were the 86th NY and 122nd PA. (They were just North of the Orange Turnpike)

Mott's mixed NJ/PA/NY brigade captured many flags, but none were listed as captured from the 22nd Va Battalion.

The 4th Ohio admitted they captured a flag, but did not report what flag it belonged to. The 7th West Virginia did not report capturing any flags.

Another odd one.

Well, sorry I could not be much help,

Shawn Prouty
