Re: 22nd Virginia Battalion flag - Chancellorsvill

I email some of my associates about this subject and one responded back, claiming the 7th West Virginia infantry did capture a flag. They freed Zouaves who had been captured and a rebel flag. The Zouaves took the captured flag and ran away. The Zouave regiment was the 114th Pennsylvania. The 114th Pennsylvania took on the 14th South Carolina. Now if the 7th West Virginia freed the Zouaves then the flag the 7th West Virginia captured just might have been the 14th SC or another SC regiment in the same brigade.

The 68th PA captured the 10th Va's battle flag. (OR 25, Page 414).

OR. 25, Page 372. The 4th Ohio claimed to have captured a rebel flag.

The 5th NJ, claimed three flags captured. (OR 25, Page 475)

Mott's Brigade claimed "Five stands of colors" were captured. (OR 25, Page 478)

"The colors were taken from the Twenty-first Virginia, Eighteenth North Carolina, First
Louisiana, Second North Carolina, and the fifth from some Alabama regiment."

The 7th NJ claimed they captured the 2nd NC's flag. The also claimed taking a second flag. (OR 25, Pages 478/482).

The 8th NJ and 2nd NY did not claim to have captured any flags. The 115th Pennsylvania claimed two flags captured. (OR 25, Page 482).

Confederate reports on captured Union flags.

53rd Georgia took the 2nd Rhode Island flag. (OR 25, Page 837).

6th Virginia took a flag from the 107th Ohio. "The standard, a most elegantly finished work, was duly
delivered". (Page 863).

The 16th Mississippi claimed to have captured a Union flag with "145" on it. This was the 145th Pennsylvania's flag). The 145th NY did not report losing a flag. One of Ramseur's officers made the soldier put the flag down and took it.

Perry's Florida brigade claimed "One Standard" captured. (Page 877).

The 28th NC captured "1 Standard" and "Flag Staff and Portion of another" from the 3rd Maine. (Page 893).

The 7th NC captured both flags from the 128th Pennsylvania. Colonel E.G. Haywood was wounded and he brought one of the flags with him back to his home. The 128th Pennsylvania was a Nine month regiment and Chancellorsville was their last battle. (The 128th PA was in the 12th Corps). Along with the 46th PA that lost their State Flag. I question the 28th NY and 5th Conn also in Knipe's brigade. This brigade lost many officers. In Ross's Second Brigade, 12th Corps, the 20th Conn lost close to 100 Prisoners, curious if they lost a flag.

I am also curious if BG. Hays (Union) lost his brigade flag. BG. Hays and his staff were captured. (Page 935).

"Rodes' brigade. - Third Alabama Regiment captured and have in their possession 2 stand of Federal artillery colors; Sixth Alabama Regiment captured 1 battery flag; Fifth Alabama Regiment lost its colors inside the intrenchments at
Chancellorsville." (Page 949).

"Ramseur's brigade. - Second North Carolina Regiment lost its colors; Fourth
North Carolina Regiment lost its colors". (Page 949)

"Iverson's brigade. - Fifth North Carolina Regiment, 1 flag captured by
Lieutenant  H. H. Smith, Company A; Twelfth North Carolina Regiment, 3 flags
captured by Private J. S. Webber, Company E; one, a large United States flag,
was turned over to Major-General Stuart on Sunday" (Page 949)

Iverson's brigade captured the 46th PA's State Flag,(Page 990). I believe the 8th PA CAV's guidon and a artillery flag. What is amazing the same soldier (J.S. Webber) captured all three flags.

The 23rd NC captured, 1 flag and 1 guidon captured. "The flag-staff of the regiment being shot in two, was replaced by that of the
enemy, and the captured flag subsequently lost by carelessness". (Page 950). "We captured a large number of prisoners, including a brigadier, or brigade commander, by Private Alburtus Gabriel, Company K, and 1 regiment flag." (Page 992).

The 5th Alabama is listed as losing a flag. (Page 953). The 26th Alabama got their flag back. (Page 966).

The 58th Virginia lost their flag fighting at Fredericksburg during the Chancellorsville battle. (Page 1002).

The 4th Virginia captured, "A member of my regiment captured also a small artillery flag, which he tore from a piece of artillery captured near the house on said hill. The flag-staff being shot nearly in two, nothing but the flag was
brought off, and is now in possession of the captor." (Page 1019).

Well that is what I found on the Official Records, 25.

Hope that helps, still nothing on the 22nd Virginia Battalion.

Have a good day,

Shawn Prouty

Doles' brigade. - This brigade captured 2 battery flags. The men in whose hands
they were placed were wounded, and carried the flags with them to the hospital.
They have been written for. (Page 950)

Summary. - Flags lost, 3; flags captured, 11.
