Normally, the adjutant of the unit (brigade, regiment, etc.) was the custodian of the unit's papers and records. I'm not sure about company papers. I've seen a few accounts where it was specifically mentioned that a regiment's papers were lost when the wagon containing the adjutant's portable desk was captured. I've seen nothing specific regarding any papers lost in the capture of the train at Longview on March 29, 1864.
