Linda

As I understand this request the only thing I can add is that "IF" the family did not remove the remains to their home cemetery, and their family history does not have a record of such a move, it is probably lost.

Shortly after the war was over the federal government authorized the removal of union soldiers remains from "unholy Grounds" in the throughout the south to the National Cemeteries system. Most but not all of the soldiers were removed. Those in eastern Arkansas were moved to the National Cemetery in Memphis.

The process was not very professional. Private contractor were paid $1.50 per set of remains. They were not concerned with trying to identify who the remains were. Nor is some cases whether the remains were actually Union Soldiers.

Those remains that could be identified, the contractors usually wrote the name on the wooden casket with chalk. Most were transported transported in the open in wagons and then loaded onto steamboats for the trip to Memphis. IF these caskets were rained on during the process the name would wash out and would not be readable by the time they arrived at the National Cemetery in Memphis. Hence the large number of "Unknown" markers in the National Cemetery there.
