The Arkansas in the Civil War Message Board

Re: Lt. Col. Charles L. Young, 32nd AR

Bruce, yes sir the Charles Young of the 27th Arkansas was the Izard County man. Company I was recruited primarily in Richwood Township (then part of Izard, became part of Stone when that county was created in 1873), and many of the men were relatives and neighbors of the Young family.

I place little credence in most family Civil War oral traditions. I've found far too many records which conflict with them (including those of my own family). One of the most common is that a Civil War death is presumed to be combat-related, when in fact disease was the primary cause of death among Civil War soldiers.

Charles L. Young has always been a mystery to me. He seems to have left virtually no footprints in Jackson County, or anywhere else in Arkansas that I can find. A sketch of the 32nd Arkansas in a publication of the Jackson County Historical Society several years ago said that he was a Jackson County man, but I don't recall any source given in the article.
