Here is an account of my wife's gg-grandfather in the 4th US Cavalry, Co. B. John Morphew, age 45, and his 16 year old brother enlisted in Nov. 1863. They were from Clark County, AR (originally from AL) and had four brothers in the War. One died from disease while in the 37th AR, in July 1862 and another was killed by bushwhackers/partisans in April 1864 while on leave (or deserting) from the 4th Cavalry.

John Morphew enlisted 17 November 1863 at age 45 at Benton, Pulaski County, Arkansas to the 4th Arkansas Union Cavalry with his brother Gainer Prince Morphew. John’s original discharge was furnished by the War Department on 29 November 1893. The 4th Regiment, Arkansas Union Cavalry was organized at Little Rock December 1863 and served within Arkansas:
