I use to drive the Camden Road from Jenkins Ferry to I-30 in the early 70's. It ran from Leola along Cox Creek to the battlefield crossed the Saline River at the park, then ran just west of hwy 46 to road 291 about 1/4 mile west of hwy 46, crossed 291 going north on a forestry road(I think was named Squirrel trail). The roads back then had names in that area like, Bear trail, Squirrel trail, Paxton trail and some I can't remember. The forestry roads now have numbers. About 1/2 up this trail the Camden Road cut off to the right through the piney woods. A regular car had to drive on around and pick the Camden Road up near the intersection of Bear and Paxton trail. This was were the Union army dumped alot of their loaded wagons, to lighten their load for the run to Little Rock, also a large number of supplies and wagons were burned there. The trail headed north from there(I think was Bear trail)was the Camden R. It crisscrosses and is part of this trail for the next few miles. There was some elderly lady house that the Union stopped at in this area, I can't remember her name, it was still there in the 1970's. You've now arrived at Road 190, crossing it going northeast the Camden R. wanders across a couple of county roads the next two to three miles, the old road bed has deep cut banks in places running through thick scrub pine. (In the 1970's) It now arrives at an interesting place, Whitten's Mill a small skirmish occured there and the mill was destroyed. About 1970 through, I believe Ed Goolsby research the orginal mill site was found and excavated, it sat next to the Camden Road. I went to the site for a dedication about this time. They brought an elderly lady(a relative of the Whitten's)to show her the site. It was a small handmade brick building, nothing left but the foundation and the door opening, also marked were a big ash dump, and a water source a spring. There were signs that the mill was burned. The Camden Road now crosses hwy 270 again headed north, a couple of miles north the Union Army unlimbered some artillery and fired shells back down the road to keep the confederates at bay. At times both armies were strung out for miles down the road, especially the Union. At this the Confederate cavalry slowly followed and finally ended the pursuit. The Road continues slightly north and west of Belfast, crossing out of Grant county into Saline county. A skirmish was fought at Hurricane Creek, I believe this was the last contact the armies made. The Camden Road crosses I-30 at a place where a small car lot use to be, out of business now but the building is still there, it was called Car-R-Us. Then it ran north to Hwy5 just west of or at Collegeville. R.D.
