I have found that Civil War documents produced in the field were folded in half, then twice more, most likely to be filed in their “pigeon holes” cabinets.
Over the years, holes developed in corners, ink had run, splotched, etc. As such, accurate reading became difficult.
Quite a lot of errors resulted for these reasons.
Back in 1997, Jeff Giambrone at the Old Court House Museum in Vicksburg found a list of 77 East Tennessee soldiers buried in the city cemetery. These men had not been identified previously.
My guncle’s unit ID, the 43rd Tennessee was read as 48.
I was assigned the task of sorting out names, organizations, etc., for ordering VA tombstones. It was quite a task.
