My experience has been that Fold3.com, as good and helpful as it is, sometimes fails to scan all the soldiers in some units.

Numerous times I have been unable to find a soldier's CMSR on Fold3, but looking on the actual NARA microfilm, the record is there.

FWIW, this incomplete scanning of records by Fold3 is not limited to CMSRs, but is found on other NARA microfilm Civil War records on Fold3 as well.

I have casually mentioned this to some of the NARA employees that I have gotten to know over the years and every one of them was aware of this situation.

As far as an explanation for this, my best guess is that it is simply oversights on the part of Fold3's employees. I too have noticed that missing records are sometimes in "clumps." I wonder if they finish A thru D before quitting time and don't notice the next morning that they are starting with G.
