George,

The opposing lines are indeed very well preserved. I was surprised to note how changed the direction of the Mississippi river is since the 1860's as well. Had no idea there was that much difference! I asked after Mr. Winschel @ the park HQ (he has several books for sell there). I was told that the gentleman now works out of the Pemberton House and that all of the records (diaries etc) have been transferred there as well. Unfortunately it wasn't open to the public on a day to day basis. We're planning a trip to Chickamauga in Sept (around the battles' anniversary) and will definitely get back to Vicksburg this fall as well. Perhaps I can make an appt with Mr. Winschel.

I'm sorry to say that I missed Port Gibson but I'd like to thank Mr. Conrad and Mr. Odom for their suggestions, also Mr. Alan Pitts. I will definitely take advantage of the info they so kindly provided when we return to Vicksburg. ALL of the information is greatly appreciated. Very grateful for this site! It's wonderful.

Sincerely,

Rachelle

P S I found the Cairo amazing as well. Actually "standing on the deck" of an ironclad and seeing some of those artifacts......wow. Just....wow!
