A question which has nagged me for some years concerns that stretch of the Atlanta to Vicksburg RR trunkline which, between Montgomery and Selma, was not completed during the CW. That one book "Southern Railroads" mentions this fact but does not explain it, Wayne Cline's book on Alabama's railroads also mentions this fact but does not explain it.

Can anyone explain to me why these 50 miles could not be completed in 4 years?
