The 62nd was 1st Ala Junior Reserve the nucleus of which was Lockhart's Battalion. I assume two companies were added to the battalion (Lockhart's was originally 8 COs) to make a full 10 co regiment. I know that two companies of conscripts were added to the 2nd junior Reserve to make the 63rd so I assume that this would have been true for the 62nd.

Where did you find the Cahawba federal prisoner accounts? I would love to read them. It could never mitigate individual acts of cruelty toward helpless prisoners but Cahawba had what must have been the best record of any prison north or South. Less than 200 deaths out of the 8000 held there. I dare say most camps of instruction would have had a higher death rate.
