Cahaba

I have confirmed in the O.R.'s Record of Events that the 63rd did consist of both Srs. and Jrs. However, I haven't seen anything in that regard on the 62nd.

Also, I double checked Hopkins T. Hankins, and he was in the 1st Confederate *Regiment*, at least according to Broadfoot's.

I have also confirmed by the O.R.'s Record of Events that Company C of Starke's 3rd Alabama Reserves Battalion was "stationed at Cahaba, Alabama, July 30-Oct. 31, 1864", and "November-December, 1864". Note that this does *not* necessarily mean that they were stationed on duty at the prison. However, I think that is a safe assumption, in conjunction with the other evidence. It also does not mean that they were not there for a longer period before and/or after this. This just happens to be the only two records recorded for this company in the O.R. Record of Events. Officers of Company C: Capt. John J. Moore, 1st Lt. Jesse W. Payne, 2nd Lt. B.F. Wood, and 2nd Lt. Cosley Campbell.

From that same source, it would appear that the 4th Alabama Reserves Regiment was not organized until Summer 1864, which makes it doubtful that this unit served there during the time period that is covered by the source for Hankin's name. That source is from "Cahaba: A Story of Captive Boys in Blue" by Jesse Hawes. He was transferred away from Cahaba Prison by mid-1864.

Hawes contends that Cahaba was much worse than Andersonville, and offers an explanation for his opinion of why that was so. It is pretty compelling.
