Alan PittsA/T consolidationsThu Feb 1 09:08:10 2001 I have the information you requested. However, let me describe how I developed it so that you will have a feel for how reliable it may be. I read microfilm on base regiments for consolidation -- 1st, 19th, 27th &c -- noting every man who surrendered with Johnston. If the soldier did not belong to the base regiment, I went looking for him. Enlistment information on the surrender record made the search process much easier. For instance, if the surrender record in the 27th Alabama says a man enlisted at Oxford, Ala., Jan. 1, 1862, he really belonged to the 55th Alabama. Also, there are notes in the preliminary section on the 17th Alabama which describe consolidation and new company officers. And I believe there's a document at ADAH listing the disposition of companies in the 39th Alabama after consolidation. I'd not expect individual soldiers to faithfully recall assignments due to consolidation; it took place too near the end and was in effect less than a month (Apr. 9-26, 1865). The rolls are consistent only because they were (probably) produced by the same officers who were responsible for consolidation a few day earlier. Let me know if you're still interested. Yes!
