I believe the material that you are searching for was referred to as "The Ward Raiders" By my understanding these raiders were sympathetic to the Northern Cause which lead them to raiding and killing the citizens of Covington Co.
There was data on this subject on the Covington Co. eGroup
genealogy message board.
And as a finally note, this group of Wards were not related to Wiley Ward, the noted historian from Covington Co. He and I have the same Ward ancestor[s]......Rev.War [Patriot] Soldiers, Some were in the Creek Indian Uprising[vs Red Sticks]and some were Confederate soldiers in the Civil War.
