17th Alabama Revisited

Hi,

Thanks for the tip, I'll contact them. Perhaps it's time to create a new 17th website based on the muster rolls and the infor from the book.

I've now managed to cobble together a partial roster of his company (D) from the Civil War Muster Rolls on Ancestor.com (very helpful)and I'm finding bits an pieces about others in the regiment from a variety of message boards. The data base indicates there are about 2300 or so listings for people having served in the regiment. I also noticed that a letter by one of the officers (Maj. Burnett) was auctioned off on eBay. I've contacted the buyer and asked for a photocopy.

Unfortunately, we have no photo of my ancestor or his siblings (all 6 of whom we have been told were KIA). He died of complications from his wounds in 1867 when my great grandfather was still a small child (and was orphaned). He was taken to Texas by an uncle (maternal we believe) that year. I have since found that C.O. McCall probably also served in the 4th Alabama in the latter part of the war (he is cross indexed as having done so, though with a slightly different name spelling). As the records for that regiment seem better I hope I might find some photos in an archive.

By the way, according to the National Archives, Alabama regiments were among the few on both sides which recorded the battles each of the soldiers fought in. Not sure if this is true for the 17th. Supposedly the muster rolls in the Alabama archives contain lists for the individual soldiers. Hope we can find them!
