I'll have to consult some reference but it sounds like your ancestor was killed at the Battle of Atlanta, which was a series of engagements around Atlanta loosely called the Battle of Atlanta.May I suggest reading "Decision in the West" by Albert Castel. It's a great source of information about the Atlanta Campaign. The other book I really love is "The Army of Tennesse" by Stanley Horn. The second book is not as detailed but still a very good read.Have you contacted Illene Thompson about your ancestors in the 17th? She and her husband are writing a book on the 17th and you should get your information to her as quickly as possible. She is compiling a roster of the 17th and can provide information about your ancestors in the unit. We're probably related very very distantly.Do you have any photos of your ancestor?
