Vivian:

My gggrandfather was captured on July 20,1864 at the battle of Peachtree Creek. I'll have to consult some reference but it sounds like your ancestor was killed at the Battle of Atlanta, which was a series of engagements around Atlanta loosely called the Battle of Atlanta.

May I suggest reading "Decision in the West" by Albert Castel. It's a great source of information about the Atlanta Campaign. The other book I really love is "The Army of Tennesse" by Stanley Horn. The second book is not as detailed but still a very good read.

Have you contacted Illene Thompson about your ancestors in the 17th? She and her husband are writing a book on the 17th and you should get your information to her as quickly as possible. She is compiling a roster of the 17th and can provide information about your ancestors in the unit. Contact her at thompson@hiwaay.net with your information.

As far as Eddins in Tennessee, I was not aware of our family having a branch there but our original Eddins family came from South Carolina to Alabama and then to Texas. We're probably related very very distantly.

Do you have any photos of your ancestor? I have two pictures of my gggrandfather in his confederate uniform.
Have you ordered his military service papers from the National Archives?

My gggrandfather was a private and I am interested in uniform types of troops from Alabama.

Contact me at kevindmiller44@hotmail.com if you have further questions. I would be interested in hearing about any information that you might have accumulated. May I suggest looking up a guy at Tarelton State College (Texas) named Ken Jones. He is a great source of information about Alabama troops and he would like to hear your information.
I don't have his e-mail address handy but if you are interested let me know and I'll look it up for you.

The book on the 17th is due out sometime this year (2001).
Illene will put you on the waiting list and will contact you when the book is published if you let her know you are interested.

Kevin
