Re the find that Glenn came up with. I too subscribe to the American Civil War Research Data Base, Historical Data Systems at:

Yesterday I went through the entire roster index which in tabular form lists the date of separation from the unit, transfer, desertion, capture, transfer, death, etc. I found no other who died that day or was wounded.

However, if one had the time, one could look into each individual record and find the expanded information which Glenn shows. The roster contains about 1400 individuals.

This would consume a lot less time than going into the National Archives Compiled Service Records which can be accessed through Fold3, a subscription service.

Sample:

Thomas B. Malone
Residence was not listed;
Enlisted on 5/5/1862 as a Private.

On 5/5/1862 he mustered into "G" Co. VA 9th Cavalry
He was Killed on 11/5/1862 at Markham, VA
