and Sir.. yes I most certainly do have an inkling of the work and time that it takes... so dont even try to go there... Ive spent many years doing research, restorations, repairs, and new marking of confederate graves.. as well as documenting burial sites of confederate veterans all around Virginia, South Carolina, North Carolina and Georgia... for over 20 years.. and collecting copies of burial records... Back in the early 1980's I attempted to form what I called the "Southern Soldiers Memorial Foundation".. which intent was to record, preserve honor and mark as many confederate graves as possible. I spent several years doing repairs and restoration work on confederate graves in Hollywood... The large bronze oblisk dedicated to the Gettysburg dead... "Fate denied them Victory but gave them a glorious immortality"... I completely restored and remounted that huge 300lb bronze disk totally at my own hand and expense.. just like you said.. no one else was interested to help... it was severely damaged and had broken off its granite block base.. and was left sitting in a lawn tractor shed for months.. I obtained it restored it and remounted it back to its place of honor.. as it now still remains.. I repaired many other stones that had been carelessly broken... Assisted countless decendants to locate the graves of their confederate ancestors and provided guidance to obtain and install grave stones... No one at that time was interested in doing much with cemeteries.. thus the foundation only lasted a few short years before lack of funding it was not able to continue its work as intended. A decade or so later the timing was better, a close friend picked up where I left off and formed the "Southern Soldiers Rememberance Fund" with the same purpose in mind.. this time around he was able to make it work and has assisted in marking hundreds of confederate graves.. If anyone has seen Hollywood in the last few years can contest to the rapid increase of marked graves in there now...
I spent a considerable amount of time trying to do the same at Oakwood.. but only encountered a simular City brick wall that the SCV has been fighting in more recent years.. they are not the first ones to try this.. but they have gotten much further than any others they have the admiration and credit for that.. no one is lessening that fame... I had previously attempted to contact the previous organization that was suspose to be doing work there.. got nothing... I wrote to the contact point listed on the SCV website for the more recent endevor providing my historical research background and previous cemetery work.. got no response there either for a second time around.. Thus the previous stated observation.. No I would have no reservation of offering to help transcribe the records... I already have created several other data bases of burial records previously.. so this would not be something new to me.. nor cleaning up and repairing stones.. or installing new ones...
Respects
frederick
