The roster found in the American Civil War Research base list 183 men who served over time in Young’s Company. Some 30, or so, are listed as having deserted May 10, 1862. For some reason they did not rejoin the regiment. I find it odd that they were carried on the books over the next year and a half. We usually see them declared deserters within six months or so and dropped from the rolls.

I have checked Federal rolls and do not find that he joined the Yankees.

May 10, 1862 was the date that Norfolk was evacuated by Confederate forces to be held by the Yankees for the reminder of the war.

The company was then acting as Harbor Guards, patrolling the lower harbor at night. They had remained at Boush’s Bluff until the 10th of May, 1862, when Norfolk was evacuated by the Confederate forces. The company, rowed their barges up the Nansemond river to Suffolk, where they destroyed their boats, placed their howitzers on the cars and carried them to Richmond.

Union forces held Norfolk for the remainder of the war.
