Thank you!

If I understand your response,
Littleton Ward, Private, Capt. John J. Young’s Company Virginia Cavalry, enlisted March 1, 1862 at Norfolk by Capt. J. J. Young for the war

On May 10, 1862, when the Company left Norfolk for Suffolk, he didn't go and was listed as a Deserter. He was carried on the books through December, 1863 as deserted May 10, 1862, with no further records after that time.

I'm told that a book, Brunswick Rebel, Johnston, Southside, United, James City, Lunenburg Rebel, Pamunkey Heavy Artillery, and Young's Harborguard, by Jeffrey C Weaver (Lynchburg, Va. : H.E. Howard, ©1996) says that he was one of 32 men listed as Deserted as of May 10, 1865 and that they may have been cut off in the fighting. I so love it when sources agree. It happens so rarely!

I've identified 3 Littleton Wards in / around Norfolk at that time. The records you're looking at don't happen to specify a middle initial/name do they? My ancestor was a Littleton Thomas Ward.

Thanks!
