Mike - Thank you. I purchased that book this past year and read it through. I found it interesting, because it was their day to day life. I was excited to see that entry, since it's the only one where T.H. Clay is mentioned, and figured it was probably indeed T.H. Clay, despite the misspelling, as I've never seen J.H. Clay on the company roster or elsewhere.

T.H. Clay lived in Ellis County before the war. Interestingly enough, in 1860 he was living with a family by the name of Mabry. He was 17. I have no idea what happened to his parents. He was born in Tennessee. Four of the Mabry brothers also enlisted in the Confederate Army - two in the 12th Texas and two in the 19th Texas, of the same brigade. One, George Mabry, was also in Company H, 12th Texas, with T.H. Clay.
