Thanks for your interest. The only proof I have at this time of this ancestors service is that I saw his name on the enlistment rolls at the Cherokee Co Courthouse in Cherokee Co TX about 20 years ago. I had also seen his name listed on the roll of what I remember to be Browns Regiment posted on a web site that is no longer active. He told my grandmother he was posted in the Galveston-Sabine Lake area.
His name is Joseph Shockler(Shochlar) born 1798 in Germany. Immigrated to U.S. at age 12 in 1810.
He had a son and a step son who were lost in the war. One with the 7th Inf the other I believe with the 10th but I am still researching. A third son, James, joined after running away in 1863 at age 16. He served with Borders Regiment and lived through the war, dying in 1925 near Hillsborough TX.
Joseph was 65 when he joined in 1863 and was skilled as a cook and blacksmith, joining because his son and stepson had died.
I have not checked National Archives for his, Joseph's, records.
He was married 3 times, had children by all 3 women and outlived all of them.
He died in Cherokee Co, TX in 1902 at the age of 104. He is buried at Lynches Chapel Cemetery, Alto TX. and was my great-great grandfather.
Someone in the family may have his pension documents but I am unsure.

Thanks for contacting me. Please forward any discovery you make.

Sincerely

Steven White
