Re: Hill County
Both my great grandfather and his father served during the war. They lived near Pittsburg in Upshur County. Today this is Camp County. They were listed as farmers in the 1860 Census. In 1870 Census shows them living near Osceola in Hill County, Texas. The occupation of both are listed as "Wagoner". After the war they were flat broke, but so was almost everyone. Undoubtedly they had a team and wagon, so they began hauling freight. Why Hill County was chosen, I have often wondered myself. There was no railroad there at the time, hence the need for wagoners.
