Both Kerrville and Fredericksburg were striving to have railroads. Kerrville won out. Later Fredericksburg started to build a spur with their own money. Even drilled a long tunnel which would have made it feasible. After the tunnel was built, they ran out of money. The tunnel still exist near Luckenbach, as a home for bats. Land was cheap and the Comanches were almost gone. Colonel Hays had helped that. San Antonio had a demand for shingles, which came from cyprus along the Guadalupe River. The area supported cattle and horses and sheep. Per square mile, there were way less Yankees and reconstruction trash and problems.
