Re: 51st Virginia Miliita at Fort Donelson?

Hello Greg, I met you a few years ago in Nashville, TN if memory serves me correctly. I totally agree with you that the 51st Va. Militia was not listed at Fort Donelson. That is the reason why I put a question mark after my post. I can only say that according to the Camp Chase Records that these two men were listed as being captured at Fort Donelson and they died at Camp Chase.

Having said that I did find in the newspapers of Columbus a list for the Confederates being brought to Columbus, ie Camp Chase. Neither man was listed in that newspaper article. I have not yet looked for any additional soldiers from the 51st Va. Militia ie their CMSR's. They may have been captured in the Shenandoah Valley since the 51st VA. Militia did hail from Fredrick County VA.

As of right now it is just a curious condition that these two officers are reported as taken as prisoners at Fort Donelson. It very well could be a mistake. However since the 51st VA Militia has an incomplete history of their unit I think further research into other soldiers of the 51st VA Militia is called for especially for Companies C and D.
