Can you offer proof to the contrary?
The reason why you can't find Mills is that he never existed. There are at least four soldiers buried at the CCCC that have stones that are not there.
1) Major Alexander Cassady really spelled Casseday was taken home for burial after he died by his father and wife and interred at the Cave Hill Cemetery in Louisville, KY. Since Major Casseday died in the spring of 1862 and the CCC was not started until August 1, 1863 it is impossible that he is buried there yet he has a stone.
2) The reason why you can't find Captain Mills is that he does not exist. Rather I believe it was an error made in Nelson, Georgia in 1907. In a few weeks I hope to prove the error. My hunch is that when you flip the W to M ie Mills/Willis that Nelson made a mistake.
3) Benjamin Leroy Wilkes according to the marker B.L. Wilkes is not buried with himself. Yet the Camp Chase marker has him being buried twice.
4) Weatherbee likewise does not exist. He was buried with Weatherly who did exist. Again, when I receive further information in the coming weeks I also believe I can find the error at Nelson, Ga.
The stones you now see at Camp Chase were put there in 1908 by the Blue Ridge Marble Company out of Nelson, Georgia. I believe they received their information from the 1907 Camp Chase Register. The 1907 Register I believe was copied from Chaplain Tolford's work in 1867 to then Governor Cox of Ohio in his Executive Report.
Captain James H. Willis was the other soldier with the 51st Virginia Miilitia who died at Camp Chase and was captured at Fort Donelson, TN.
Both Isacc Renner and James H. Willis were with the 51st Virginia Militia and captured at Donelson and died at Camp Chase. If proof of the contrary can be made, I'd like to see it for historical purposes. Thx Dennis
