It had to be a misunderstanding on my part as I'm sure he has great knowledge of Fort Donelson. Jimmy said the Ed Bears had been doing research on the Fort Donelson prisoners a while back. Mr. Jobe also said something I was not familiar with in that General Grant and his staff had no idea or unprepared to deal with so many prisoners of War. General Buckner offered his help and Grant took it and told his officers that any orders from General Buckner were to be considered as orders from himself insofar as taking care of the prisoners and providing them with food, etc. General Grant allowed the officers at Fort Donelson to keep their sidearms and swords and that is the reason why at Camp Chase when the prisoners arrive there on Febuary 28, and March 1, 1862 some of them would be given passes to visit downtown Columbus, Ohio and why the Confederates were walking about the city in their uniforms and weapons much to the alarm of the citizens of Columbus. General Buckner would offer his sword but Grant refused to accept it. As for General Buckner he would be taken to Fort Warren, MA. General Grant had also offered money to Buckner as Buckner had loaned then Captain Grant some money in New York City. Buckner turned down the offer. This information was taken from a phone call with Jimmy and as we see already I had a misunderstanding about some previous information so it should not be taken as fact.
