Re: An insight to Fort Donelson

And this was taken from the National Archives in Washington, DC.
"This command originally consisted of eight companies which were organized as a battalion in October of 1861, but it was increased to a regiment by the addition of two companies in November of 1861."

There is no doubt that we are talking about the same unit. I see it as Forrests' Original Cavlary Battalion and Forrests' 3rd Tennessee Cavarly. And when you add the two other companies it could be Forrests' 3rd Regiment of Tennessee Cavarly. One of the 1st Lt's was of course M.L. Sims of Company D who called it Forrests' Original Cavarly Battalion. Maybe it was only eight companies when they were there and hence his reference to it.

I can't explain why the Fort Donelson National Park service had no knowledge of these companies of Forrests' being captured. Perhaps they misunderstood me or I was not listening close enough. Do you have any knowledge of any members of either Company D or I, enlisted as dying at Camp Douglas? Thx Dennis
