Rebecca,

I am writing the book on Tennessee Civil War flags. As Ken has said, this was the flag of the 3rd Tennessee Cavalry Battalion and it was sent to Pennsylvania after its capture. It was last seen in the early 20th Century.

The dominant flag pattern of western Confederate cavalry through late 1863 was the First National and this was probably what the regiment carried when it formed from Napier's and Cox's TN Cavalry Battalions. Unlike the cavalry of the Army of Northern Virginia, which standardized their battle flags in late November 1861 (for the most part), the western cavalry did not go that route until October 1863 when the first Mobile Depot flags (rectangular red flags with blue crossed bars and 12 stars) were issued to William Jackson's Cavalry Division. Then, in early 1864, Joe Wheeler's Cavalry Corps received battle flags of the Augusta Depot (rectangular red flags with blue crossed bars with 13 stars). More Mobile Depot flags were issued into 1864 as well with SD Lee's cavalry and Forrest's Cavalry Corps getting them (Forest in July 1864).

But still, some cavalry units were using First National flags. I wrote an essay on western CS cavalry flags for the Tennessee Division SCV progam a couple years ago and detailed a number of these flags therein.

Where the flag of the 10th Tennessee Cavalry is I have no clue. Like Ken, I have been studying flags for years and we both have learned that hundreds of these flags remain missing today sadly.
