Re: 10th TN Cavalry - 3rd Tn Cav Btn

You and I have been chasing the same banner. Just a little history here. Third Battalion of Tennessee Cavalry _ Brazelton' Dasher received their flag Sept. 3, 1861 as recorded in The Nashville Gazette. "Within the circle of stars in the field of blue is the motto "DEATH BEFORE SUBJUGATION". On the reverse is the number of the Battallion" The flag that the 15th PA cavalry has captured near Wilkinson's Crossroads was most likely that of the 1st Tennessee Cavalry under the command of Col. J. E. Carter during Wheeler's first raid.

That said 3rd Battallion became the 14th Battallion became the 1st Tennessee Cavalry Regiment. The flag was lost near Nolensville or Laverne TN. The flag in question had been altered to show the regimental number to be 1st with a patch in place of the 4 for the 14th. This flag was lost and was soon replaced during the Kentucky campaign by General Humphrey Marshall ' daughter Nellie Nicholas Marshall no record of it describing the second flag. It was also lost. This is the flag description given to me by the state museum for Brazelton 's' flag. It didn't belong to the tenth

I still seek the flag for the first but as I was made aware the museum where it might have been kept went up in flames many years ago.
