Paul,,,After Wheeler broke up the federal cavalry in Georgia,he was ordered to take his Corps into central Tennessee and damage Sherman's communications. This included Iversons Brigade the 1,2,3,4 and Colonel John R Hart's 6th Georgia. The expedition left the AOT in late August and crossed the Tennesse high up below Knoxville.September 1st.the troops were just south of Nashville and broke camp moving down towards Franklin/Thompson's Station and the Nashville & Decatur RR.On September 2nd.while tearing up tracks there was a fight south of Franklin near Winstead Hill. Its possible your ancestor fell around here.

General Wheeler's great raid was not a great success. His troops were scattered and chased so often they were not able to accomplish much permanent damage. The majority crossing back over the Tennessee at Colbert's Shoals about Sep.9th.Some units were left in Tennessee and joined up later with General Forrest on his raid into the area.

Perhaps the best book on the subject by my friend Lewis A.Lawson,"Wheeler's Last Raid." 1986 Penkville Publishing Co.Greenwood,Fla.

You might try and find,"A War Story" by Ben W.Darsey,Statesboro,Ga.no date, for a Georgian's account of the raid.
