Of course this is what the Yankees wanted Southern soldiers to do.

Unless they took the oath of allegiance (similar to the pledge of allegiance today), deserters who returned home could find themselves arrested and inside a box car headed north to prison. Oath of allegiance would also mean that Confederate veterans would be unlikely to be awarded pension benefits.
