Alan, you have my work cut out for me, but I'm feeling a little overwhelmed. You said Tenn misc records, unfiled papers and slips. Where on earth do I find these? Online or a visit to Tenn? If I make the trip there where do I start the search? Next, where do I find Federal Provost records for Hickman Co.? These Confederates I am researching burned the courhouse in the War. What is the National Archives Code you said you could give me? Michael R. Bradley, the author of "With Blood and Fire" stated the original Federal Provost Records are in the National Archives (I can't go there) but located copies of microfilm at Wallace State Community College in Hanceville, Ala which are not indexed and one must go through all 100 reels. Tenn State Library and Archives in Nashville has microfilm Union Provost Marshal's Files of Papers Relating to Individual Citizens only available by interlibrary loan, but not arranged geographically.

The bottom line is my ggf was with AD McNairy and Albert Henon Cross ,who,Alan D. Gaff, the author of the article in the Civil War News referred to Cross, his officers Dr. James W. McLaughlin of Maryland, first lietenant, Cross' brother Brownlee, 2nd. Lt. and A. Duvall McNairy of Davidson Co. 3rd. Lt. as scouts, guerillas and bushwackers. His article went into detail of some of their activities in Hickman Co. Although Tenn in the Civil War says their is no muster rolls, My ggf's parole lists Company as A.D. McNairy, Harvey's Batt.
Author Gaff had some other names serving with Cross.... LaFayette Turbyville, two Southerners murdered named only as Pointer and Buford of which there was a Union account of (I can understand this being in the OR, but also a Southern account of the event, which I where I could find that source.
Mr. Gaff names opposing Union officers Jordan W. Creasy,Co E. 12th Union Tenn, Captain Russ B. DAvis, 10th Union TN Cav, Brig. Joesph A Cooper, Ethelbert Crouse, Co F, 130 Indiana and more. I suppose their accounts are in the OR.

Tenn in the Civil War says of Albert Henon Cross that there are several references in thee Official Records to "attacks by McNairy's Guerrillas on the line of the Nashville and Northwestern Railroad. Captain Cross, signing as Cross' Co., Harvey's Battalion, Forrest's Scouts, had some correspondence with the Federal Authorities which led to his surrender at Franklin Tenn May 15, 1865." My GGF Miles H. Hassell's parole states he surrendered with A.D. McNairy 5/16/1865 at the Dean's house in Hickman Co.

As is probably apparent, I desparately would like to know more about Cross and McNairys activities that from the CW News article, and wonder who and if whatever source Author Alan Gaff used would have more information. All my ancestors are from Hickman Co. so I have more than the average interest.
How to locate the attacks made on the Nashville NW RR in the Official Records, which I understand are online but do not know the best or which site to use to find this.

As you see, I am quite proud of my ggf and feel like his service to the CSA is not complete with his service record stopping with his discharge to illness from the 17th Tenn., if it wasnt for the parole included in the file. I will search all resources suggested, except I cannot travel to review the microfilm on The Union Provost. This venue is the only way I know to get assistance in my quest for informaton on my ggf's activities for the Confederate cause in Hickman Co. I'm not asking to be spoon fed, just for a little specific direction in my searcing.

Thanks so much. If it would be of any help in finding sources for info, I could send the article I referred to if an address was provided to sent it to.
