Cindy --

Men who weren't in either army are difficult to trace because there's so little opportunity to leave paper trails. For records of men who don't match recognized CSA military units, check Tennessee miscellaneous records, as well as Unfiled Papers and Slips. I'll provide the National Archives microform code if you need it.

Try service files for any either of the officers mentioned, plus anything about them in the Official Records. Bear in mind that there are four series, not just one, and all are worth checking. You should also check newspapers issued in the area during the war.

Tennessee pension applications and the questionnaires could include valuable clues. If you can select files from counties in this area, it'll help greatly in terms of time and results.

If you have access to the microfilm, Federal provost marshalls records are useful for specific names of those arrested. Franklin County Historical Society has a number of publications which review the war from every aspect imaginable. I'd hope Hickman had something similar.
