I just re-read Ft. Donelson's Legacy and I agree with Greg about the thorough research. My interest is primarily Stewart County and for years I have been trying to find out what happened to three of my ancestors---at least two of them took the Oath. And at least one of them joined partisans (e.g. Napier's Batt.) after signing the Oath. Since the guerillas did not keep muster rolls (or at least hid them well) and the partisans often did not keep muster rolls, it is difficult if not impossible to identify them now. Mr. Cooling wrote about a Union officer who was very disgusted about this matter and he said all of the dead guerillas he found had a copy of the signed Oath on their persons and he did not believe any Southerners were trustworthy even if they signed the Oath 40 times. That warmed my heart.
