Re: Confederate Conscripts in East Tennessee ?

My paternal 2nd great-grandfather was David Land Co.I 13th NC Infantry, a conscript from Wilkes County. From Feb.14, 1864 till he was captured April 2nd, 1865. he was held at Hart Island, NY till June 20, 1865. He trained briefly at Camp Vance, Morganton, NC. He got to Virginia about the same time as Grant .

My maternal 2nd great-grandfather was John Harvey Cox from Sullivan County, TN Co.B 19th TN Infantry. Probably also a conscript. Both men were 38-39 years old, married, farmers, and had several children. Only 3 cards in his file. One with his name, rank, and Company B. 19th TN. 2nd card shows him captured at Cowan, TN July 3, 1863. Transferred to Nashville July 9th. " Due to be released at Louisville, KY. No record or mention of him taking the Oath and agreeing to stay " North of the Ohio. " family lore says he returned to Sullivan and had several run-ins with the local home-guard. I suspect he probably trained ( if he had any ) at Knoxville ? If he strongly resisted Confederate service would they have even bothered ? Just put him on a train and send him to the Army ?
