According to a short sketch of Thomas Anderson Jeffers found in the book The Maryland Line Confederate Soldiers' Home and Confederate Veterans' Organizations in Maryland by Daniel Carroll Toomey, Jeffers was born in Edgefield, SC, he enlisted at Charleston, SC, in April of 1861 as a private in the Beaufort District Troops, Hampton's Legion and was elected second lieutenant of Company B, Second South Carolina Cavalry in July of 1862. This sketch was written by Jeffers about himself for the Soldier's Home. His company was disbanded at Greensboro N.C. in April of 1865. He was in the battles of Fredericksburg, Brandy Station, Seven Pines, Seven Days before Richmond, Second Manassas, Sharpsburg, Fort Fisher, Gettysburg and others in which his command was engaged. I happened upon this info while doing research about this man because I once thought he had possibly been killed with one of my ancestors. If this turned out to be true, I was hoping to be able to find more info concerning my ancestor’s death. This proves that Lt. Thomas A. Jeffers survived the war, even though there is nothing in his compiled service record indicating he surrendered in NC and he also didn't appear in any post-war censuses. I'm not sure when he moved to Maryland, but he was listed on the 1900 census as living in the Maryland Line Confederate Soldiers Home near Baltimore.
