I agrree on your points. My opinion iso the majority of the deserters hid and stole supplies and attempted to avoid conflict if possible. I have read of soldiers on furlough running into deserters from their own outfits on the roads in this area and the meetings were friendly not confrontational. Newts bunch was the exception.
