Not many folks understand how rough that part of the country is during December. It was anything but a fast moving Cavalry raid. The union letters and diaries talked about horses having to swim many bayous and mud so deep the riders were in mud to their thighs. If it hadn't been for pontoon brigades and Courduroy roads they would still be in Louisiana today.
