My ancestor was captured and paroled at Vicksburg on July 3, 1863. He signed the form that stated he would not take up arms again. Does this mean he did not have to return to fighting? The family story is that he did not return to his unit. On his pension application he stated that he tried to return to his unit but was not able.
Another researcher and I are at odds about whether he was AWOL, deserter, or free from fighting.
