Dear Friends; I have followed this thread with much interest. I had the same problem. My Ancestor was in the 36th Mississippi, just up the line from the 38th, It was the same story. Much information about him before about july 10th or whenever he followed General Pemberton out of Vicksburg. As you, and many othrs say, when he got beyound the Federal Lines, he disappeared, It took me ten years, off and on to find him,
Once I found the key, it became very simple.
He simply went home. (He lived 20 - 30 miles from the front gate.)
When he got his strength back, his family cooked and fed him food that he could eat and revover with. He then joined other members of the family in Wirt Adams Regiment and finished out the War. (Once I wound the Key, it became simple.)
I am glad I did not let him go as a deserter or AWOL or whatever.

Thus, i urge you to keep an open mind, and keep you eyes open watching for a tid bit.
