Re: Salathiel Smith Co. H 3rd Miss. Inf.

Sam, I have seen his name spelled as Salathal, Selathiel, and Salathiel. Since he was not literate it was left to whomever was recording his name.

As for his wife being buried in a different Cemetery...The story goes that when she died the Pass Christian cemetery existed and there was no cemetery except for some family cemeteries in Long Beach ( there actual home). She was related to the original settlers of the Long Beach area which at the time was called the Chimneys, later Rosalie, and finally Long Beach in 1905. Also of interest is that the first Mayor of Long Beach was J. J. Whitten or Whitton who was a veteran that had served in the 3rd Mississippi as well. This may have been a connection that led him to having a burial plot in the new cemetery.

So when he died he was buried in Long Beach. His coffin was carried along the beach Shell road from Mississippi City (Beauvoir) to Long Beach. He helped build both Beauvoir (Brown Estate) and the shell road that crossed the Mississippi coast from Biloxi to Pass Christian (Now US highway 90).
