Re: Salathiel Smith Co. H 3rd Miss. Inf.

He is recorded on the Company H February 28,1865 muster roll where they were near Smithfield, N. C.:

Presence not stated with note following:

Detached teamster, with Brig Commissary train now on way from Miss.* followed by a hand written note

“+ Name appear in Col Names [sp?]** Present & as Selathial Smith”

* Note, this does not appear to apply to Feb. 25 as the regiment had returned back East spring of 1864.

** Unreadable

This record of events for the Field & Staff could be in reference to the brigade train in his file:

Stationed at Montevallo, Alabama, March-April 1864.
The regiment, while camped at Demopolis, Alabama, was
detached from the brigade by order of Lieutenant-General
[Leonidas] Polk to repair the Mississippi and Alabama Rivers
Railroad to Meridian, which was destroyed by the enemy under
General [William Tecumseh] Sherman.
March 5.— They commenced work.
April 1.— Completed the road to Meridian and returned to the
brigade.
April 3.— Started with the division on the march for Montevallo,
Alabama.
